The Daffodil ‘Jack Snipe ‘Narcissi cyclamineus a fall planted bulb, is a cute little Narcissus with vivid yellow cups contrasting with the pure white petals. The Blue Isle, ‘Gladiolus Blue Isle a spring planted corm, exhibits magnificent dark blue flowers with a light blue heart. Gladiolas are also commonly called Sword Lily or Corn Flag. Plant in groups of six or more in the garden, or grow lots of them for cuttings in a bed. To extend the time of flower availability of your Glads, plant in two week intervals from early spring through June. They make striking accents in a mixed border. Glads are easy to grow and like to be in full sun and in well drained soil. Increase water and fertility when flowers begin to develop, then plant 4″ deep in clay soils, 6″ deep in others; the deeper the planting the less need for staking. In frost prone areas, dig them when the leaves turn yellow, dip them in a fungicide, and store in a dry frost free location over winter.

The Spirea ‘Tor Spiraea betuliflia ‘Tor is a compact spirea reaching a height and width of 2-3 ft. Its tiny white flower clusters are set against a backdrop of deep green leaves that are almost iridescent in the summer. Foliage turns a deep, purplish-red in the fall. The flowers are attractive to butterflies. Light shearing will encourage repeat bloom. Tor blooms on new wood, so pruning in late winter or early spring is recommended. Because of its small size and excellent attributes, Tor spirea makes a great foundation shrub.

The Tomato Big Beef, ‘Lycopersicon lycopersicum is a beefmaster type with twice the yields. Coupled with old-fashioned, rich flavor Big Beef features colossal fruit size and yield, uniformity and a full spectrum of disease resistance. The fruits are globe-shaped and smooth, weighing 8 oz. to 1 pound. It is a indeterminate variety to try in virtually any climate because they adapt easily to different environments. It is excellent for slicing or in salads. This is close to the perfect tomato plant. Tomatoes should be planted outside after the last average frost date. In warm winter/hot summer areas, tomatoes can be planted in early fall for winter harvest. Tomatoes prefer well drained soil that is high in organic matter. Tomatoes need at least 1 inch of water a week. Soak to depth of 6 to 10 inches when watering. They need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day.

The Green Smoketree, Cotinus coggygria, is a deciduous shrub/tree. The branches are spreading, loose, and as wide as high. Green Smoketrees have bluish green, sometimes yellow like leaves. Their fall color is red-purple. This deciduous tree has showy pubescent pedicels and peduncles of flowers that provide the “smoke” appearance. Smoketrees like sun. The Dianthus Firewitch, Dianthus gratianopolitanus, is a beautiful pink flower that can be somewhat lacey and fringed. With its grassy blue-gray foliage and profuse blooming time, Firewitch is one not to miss. Dianthus Firewitch has a plant spread of 6-8 and a height of 6. Dianthus will bloom from mid summer to early fall. In order for a longer bloom time, deadhead the blooms continuously throughout the summer. Dianthus needs a sunny site with well-drained soil, but will tolerate some shade in the afternoon and humidity. These fragrant, spicy dove like flowers look wonderful as a border plant, rock gardens, along walks or paths, for edging and a definite in cottage gardens.

Prized for large bouquets, stately gladioli (Yes, that’s the accepted plural form, and much more graceful than the alternatives. ) offer an enormous color range, including the most delicate pastels, bold hues and almost unimaginable bi-colors. Their sword-like foliage and tall, impressive flower spikes make striking accents in the mixed flower border. For best garden effect, plant in groups of six or more of a single color, or grow dozens of them in a bed reserved for cutting. (Imagine the luxury of having arm-loads of glads to display around the house!) The Penstemon Prairie Splendor has large flowers of white, rose, lavender and pink with narrow, lance-shaped evergreen foliage. The flowers only last for about four weeks in midsummer but defiantly dont want to be missed. Prairie Splendor has a plant height of 26 and a spread of 18-24. It is best to plant Penstemon in a full sun location, having a moist, well-drained area. Argent sweet corn adapts well to cool soils and has a high tolerance ot Stewart’s Wilt and Northern Corn Leaf Blight. The ears will be about 8 inches long and 2 inches in diameter. Plant in the spring, a week or two after the last spring frost or when the soil is warm. In the deep south, this can be as early as February. Successive plantings in two week intervals will produce a much longer cropping season. Corn prefers a deep, rich well drained soil. Harvest the ears when the husks are dark green and the silks are brown but not brittle. Corn is usually ready 3 weeks after silks appear.
