How Does My Garden Grow?

Filed under: My Garden — Stephanie @ 3:26 pm

My garden is making progress. The containers don’t seem to work well for some of the plants, but others are coping just fine.

The carrots are thriving. They take a long time to get big enough to be worthwhile, so we aren’t picking them yet, but considering the small space, we have a good number of them. The beans are growing adequately, but struggling. The bell peppers and tomatoes are doing well.

For some reason, the cucumbers died off very suddenly. No warning signs, they just rapidly died. Sometimes you just never know.

Those beets that grew are doing well. Only a few took off from the seeds that we planted, but they are growing quite well.

My fennel plant is getting taller all the time. If we can keep it up, next year it might attract some butterflies to lay eggs, so that we get caterpillars. We did this a couple years ago, and had a great many cocoons, so we hope to do this again for the kids. My daughter, who was 2 years old at the time we last had cocoons, and is 4 now, still talks about the cocoons hatching.

So far, this hasn’t been the best year for our garden. I think it relates to how long it was cool this year, and then how hard and fast summer’s heat hit us.
